SAN DIEGO, South Carolina –A pharmaceutical company called Tarki Pharmaceuticals, which manufactures and markets the generic version of Viagra, has begun selling a generic version of the erectile dysfunction medication in capsule form.

Tarki will start selling the generic version in April, said Mike Boudreau, the company’s president and chief executive officer.

Tarki’s first customer was the US Food and Drug Administration, which approved the drug in 2002. The FDA’s approval was based on a clinical study showing that Tarki’s performance in a double-blind trial, when compared to placebo, was similar to the placebo.

“This is a big win for the pharmaceutical industry,” Boudreau said.

Tarki is the world’s largest pharmaceutical company. It has a portfolio of about 7,300 products, which includes more than 100,000 generic and brand-name drugs and several of its products used in treating various health conditions. The company’s market share is about 70%.

Boudreau is a partner at Pfizer, which has been selling the erectile dysfunction medication for more than a decade. In addition to manufacturing Viagra, he also owns and holds rights to Cialis and Levitra.

Tarki has a history of operating under the brand name Viagra, with a sales force of about 100,000 members. It has also sold about 2,200 generic drugs, including two brand-name drugs for erectile dysfunction.

Tarki’s sales force includes about 10,000 members. It has more than 20,000 customers, and Boudreau said the company expects the new product to have a higher share of the global market.

Boudreau, who was chief executive of Pfizer, said he expects the new product will have a strong revenue trajectory. He said the company’s business strategy has been to develop and market the drug.

“We believe in the success of our core business,” Boudreau said.

The FDA approved the drug in 1998 for the treatment of male sexual dysfunction. Tarki’s sales have grown steadily since, with more than 1,000 prescriptions filled, according to Pfizer.

Tarki also received FDA approval in 2003 for a treatment of pulmonary hypertension, the second most common type of high blood pressure in men. It is the only drug approved for that condition, and the first for which it’s been approved for.

Boudreau said Tarki’s sales have been growing at a steady pace. He said Tarki’s success in the market is likely to continue, as its sales growth continues to grow.
